In an open concept, it is best to keep the kitchen as 'airy' as possible to keep the work area minimal and unobtrusive. This will expand the entertainment activities and when designed well, the storage is accessible and also a feature to the living space. You now have a Utilitarian kitchen, a bar, and a buffet all in one, without the 'visual clutter'.
